PVC Bench is a project that works plastic waste into a furniture piece for two people. Sold as post-consumer regrind scrap, crushed PVC is used as the main material for the bench seat top, while the wood components are made using scrap Walnut from various other projects. The bench is composed of four components, made using advanced digital fabrication techniques as well as conventional tools. It’s simple form and organic details are meant to reflect the ‘plastic’ nature of the material. Vertical and horizontal planes stretch, deform, and pierce one another to a composition that is subtle and aesthetically soft. Cutting through the PVC shards reveals a distinct surface pattern, which gradually fades into the tinted resin.
