Industrial designer Gunjan Aylawadi is a self-taught artist.
Her prior profession as a computer science engineer undoubtedly had an influence on the mathematical and geometric constructions she makes with paper.
Her current creations are painstaking paper weavings in which paper serves as both a material and a color. Aylawadi creates relief pieces that rise above the surface and expose their richness to viewers as they approach and move around them. She does this by utilizing geometry and the tension found in curled paper strips. The bands of deeply contrasted colors that have a tactile quality and symbolize memories of rites, rituals, and scents associated with a particular location or period of time.
