Harnessing microbial power, this project develops a natural sunscreen derived from bacterial melanin to shield against harmful UV radiation. With the rise in UV exposure due to the climate crisis, conventional sunscreens pose threats to both human health and marine ecosystems. By exploring bacterial melanin’s UV absorbance and antioxidant properties, a speculative membrane is conceptualized to adapt and darken in response to UV exposure. This innovative approach not only offers efficient and long-lasting protection but also raises awareness about sun protection and skin cancer, fostering a symbiotic relationship between human health and environmental preservation.
