UK fashion startups SAGES and Osmose are developing the world’s first fully biodegradable leather alternative made from mycelium that could help reduce the fashion industry’s emissions and protect workers from harmful chemicals. Reducing the environmental impact of the textile industry is a complicated problem, but a project led by SAGES, a startup that makes dyes from food waste, could play a role in its solution.
The final product will contribute to the transition of fashion from a linear to a circular, waste-based paradigm by emphasizing waste streams for both the dyes and the coating that is applied after dyeing.
