Transforming cigarette butts into a material that will last for a long time.
A collection system with portable ashtrays has been established by the Chilean business IMEKO to repurpose cigarette butt filters. The first pure and high-quality cellulose acetate collected from cigarette butts in history It’s a novel material that works with standard plastic molding techniques. Because it is produced without the use of hazardous compounds, its carbon footprint is 36% lower than that of virgin cellulose acetate.
IMEKO created a world-first technique to turn cigarette butts into recyclable garbage through science and engineering. They can eliminate all of the harmful materials found in cigarette butts and recover the precious cellulose acetate that is used to make the filter using a mechanical-chemical process that is entirely sustainable from the ground up. A new sustainable raw material called Celion® is made from the recovered acetate. Butts from cigarettes are garbage that contains a lot of harmful substances.
