Nolwa works with designers from all around the world, bringing together two very different worlds to create original takes on traditional crafts. Karnataka’s unique metal inlay technique, Bidri, is a manifestation of 600 years of customs, methods, and materials. Expert craftspeople combined Persian and indigenous skills to produce a distinctive art form that is now identified as uniquely Indian. A specially made mold is filled with a special molten zinc alloy. The foundational piece that the artisan works on in later phases is created when this cools and solidifies. The soil of Bidar Fort is special because it has miraculous oxidizing qualities that, when dipped, convert base metal zinc into sheer black ware while pure silver inlay keeps its original color.
