Injection molding utilizing paper is not an entirely novel concept. The first patent for shaping cellulose fibers was submitted as early as 1903. Model Group created what they refer to as Paper-Pearls, which resemble nurdles but are made from wood fibers generated during the papermaking process—specifically, fibers too short for traditional paper production that would otherwise be discarded. These Paper-Pearls are mixed with bioplastics.

With a growing emphasis on sustainability since the early 2000s, the demand for eco-friendly materials has risen significantly. Consequently, there has been a resurgence of interest in paper injection molding research. Model Group has introduced three types of granules with distinct properties to fulfill various needs. Currently, the content of paper fibers in our composite granules ranges from 51% to 75%, with higher filling percentages in development.
