Junsu Kim uses vegetable leather that is tanned by sunlight and polished by rubbing its surface. Artist wanted to apply this raw and natural aesthetic on his work. coiled thin leather strings make a new flat pattern of cross-section which is normally hidden. Adapting over time, the work is gradually evolved into the three-dimensional form like a bowl shape.
Junsu Kim creates unique patterns and textures by layering different types of leather, each with its own particular color and thickness. With his bare hands the works are created – using different tensions, controlled by the tips of fingers to piece together the different strips of leather. Tree rings compiled thin leather strips into different shapes and vessels, in the hope of giving infinite life to a material that has already reached its fulfillment.
