Kinari is a bio-based composite material developed by Panasonic’s Manufacturing Innovation Division, designed to reduce petroleum use by replacing it with highly concentrated plant-derived content. Made from resources such as bamboo, cypress, corn, and coffee grounds that would otherwise be discarded, the material supports a more circular approach to manufacturing.

At its core is a cellulose-rich resin compound containing up to 85% cellulose, with newer formulations reaching 90% biomass content and an ambition to become fully plant based in the future.

Unlike conventional methods that require pulp to be mixed with water and then dried before processing, Kinari uses an innovative dry compounding technique that disperses plant fibers directly into molten resin. By removing the water intensive drying stage, the process significantly reduces energy consumption while enabling cellulose concentrations above 55%.

The high natural fiber content creates unique aesthetic possibilities. Colors and tonal variations can be achieved through material composition and moulding control rather than added pigments, producing subtle natural browning effects and a warm, wood-like appearance.
