Soft Companions explores textiles as intimate, responsive materials. We live in constant contact with fabric, yet rarely notice it. What happens when the textile begins to notice us?
The project transforms knitted materials into tactile, living-like companions that sense, move, breathe and respond to touch. Conductive yarn replaces conventional switches, pneumatic chambers make surfaces swell and contract, while felting, brushing and dissolvable yarns create increasingly tactile, organic surfaces. Natural fibers and plant-based dyes reinforce a material language that feels closer to nature than technology.
Five behavior families explore different forms of interaction:
A knitted wool body with long, curly tentacles that slowly open and close. Wooden structures deform the textile from within, while brushed, felted and plant-dyed fibers soften its machine-made appearance.
A breathing textile with a latex lining that inflates and deflates beneath knitted wool. Embedded conductive yarn responds to touch, allowing stroking to calm its irregular breathing into a steady rhythm.
Small, undyed linen creatures powered by integrated solar cells. Tiny motors make them shiver and drift toward light, becoming still as the light disappears.
Groomling
A tactile, fur-like form created from brushed raw linen and dissolvable yarns. Its loose fibers naturally tangle over time, inviting interaction through combing and grooming.
Soft Companions combines knitted textiles, e-textiles, pneumatic systems, capacitive sensing and embedded electronics with craft-based processes including brushing, felting and natural dyeing. The result is a material system that shifts textiles from passive surfaces into responsive, sensory companions, suggesting future applications across interiors, wearables, wellbeing and therapeutic environments.
