E Ink, a global leader and pioneer in ePaper technology, has announced that the BMW iX3 Flow Edition featuring E Ink Prism™. The unveiling marks a significant step in automotive innovation, as it is the first production ready vehicle to incorporate E Ink Prism™ into its exterior bodywork, transforming a concept once considered futuristic into a practical automotive solution.
The BMW iX3 Flow Edition is the result of several years of collaboration between BMW and E Ink. Their partnership has steadily advanced automotive personalization, beginning with the BMW iX Flow showcased at CES 2022, followed by the color-changing BMW i Vision Dee in 2023 and the artistic BMW i5 Flow NOSTOKANA. Each project has expanded the possibilities of integrating digital technology into vehicle design. In the latest model, E Ink Prism™ technology is embedded directly into the vehicle's bonnet, becoming the first application of its kind on a production intent automobile. The system has successfully passed BMW's rigorous automotive quality and durability standards, demonstrating that the technology is suitable for everyday driving and future large-scale vehicle production.
E Ink's electrophoretic display technology operates using millions of microscopic capsules filled with electrically charged particles. By applying electrical signals, the vehicle's surface can alter its appearance while consuming minimal power, with energy required only when switching between visual states.
The BMW iX3 Flow Edition offers eight unique animated exterior designs that range from elegant transitions to striking visual effects. These customizable animations allow owners to personalize the look of their vehicle based on their preferences, mood, or driving situation, creating a more engaging and expressive ownership experience.
