Vigils is Oxman's first Hybrid Living Textile, combining seamless 3D-knitted fabrics with engineered bacteria that grow color directly into the textile instead of using synthetic dyes. The knitted fabric acts as a biological scaffold, where genetically programmed E. coli deposit indigo and melanin pigments through 24 hours of controlled microbial growth, creating unique patterns shaped by gene expression and cellular activity. By merging textile fabrication with synthetic biology, Vigils proposes a shift from manufacturing garments to growing programmable materials that permanently record living biological processes.
